Golf: Kelly Earns First PGA Victory - 2002-01-14

American golfer Jerry Kelly held on for a one-stroke victory in the Sony Open in Honolulu, Hawaii , earning his first win on the PGA tour after playing in 200 tournaments.

The 35-year-old Kelly birdied the final hole Sunday for a round of even-par 70, finishing just ahead of John Cook, who closed with a 69.

It was the fourth time Kelly led a tournament heading into the final round. One of those was last year at the Reno-Tahoe Open, when he triple-bogeyed the 16th hole, allowing Cook to pass him for the victory.

Kelly's four-round total of 14-under-par (266) at the Waialae Country Club was on shot ahead of Cook and three shots better than third-place finisher Jay Don Blake, who made a run with a 65 on Sunday.
