Children / AIDS - 2002-02-12

A Zimbabwean humanitarian group says the government is not paying enough attention to children’s health. The Zimbabwe Women’s Lawyers Association says children, especially those affected by the AIDS epidemic, do not have access to quality medical care and have no legal rights. Netty Riusere is the group’s programs officer in charge of children’s health and legal rights. She told reporter Chinedu Offor that as the general election gets closer, the government has given priority to defense and security at the expense of child welfare. She says Zimbabwe could loose a generation to AIDS if it does not change its current policy.
