Human Rights - 2002-02-22

Zimbabwe’s main human rights group is accusing the government of denying it access to rural areas to carry out voter education programs ahead of next month’s presidential election.

The Human Rights Forum, an umbrella organization of eleven non-governmental organizations, says the government is using armed militia groups to carry out the action.

Andrew Nogogo, who is on the board of the forum, told VOA that some of his members have been turned back by these militias under threats of violence.

Zimbabwe Information Minister Jonathan Moyo denies the charge.

The Human Rights Forum has recently released a new report critical of Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe.

Mr. Ngogo discussed election violence and other issues in an interview with VOA.
