Amokachi joins MLS - 2002-02-26

In African football, star striker Daniel Amokachi of Nigeria has signed with the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer in the United States. The former captain of Nigeria's Super Eagles is being described as the highest profile African player to join an American club.

Details of Amokachi's contract with Colorado have not been released. The Rapids have been actively pursuing Amokachi since last season, when Daniel was nursing an injury in Germany.

The head coach of Colorado, Tim Hankinson, says Amokachi's breakaway speed and his ability to get in behind defenses will be a threat to every defender in the league. Daniel Amokachi was a member of Nigeria's 1996 team that won the men's soccer gold medal at the Olympics in Atlanta. Daniel also made two World Cup appearances for Nigeria, at U-S-A '94 and France '98.
