US Upsets Portugal in World Cup Match


The U.S. team has defeated heavily favored Portugal 3-2, pulling off a stunning upset Wednesday, in the World Cup football (soccer) tournament.

The Americans took a surprise 3-0 lead in the Group D match-up in Suwon, South Korea, getting goals from John O'Brien and Brian McBride and another when Landon Donovan's shot deflected in off a defender.

Portugal closed to 3-1 with a goal before half-time and got another in the second half when American Jeff Agoos accidentally deflected the ball into his own net.

Earlier, the Russian team opened its World Cup campaign with a 2-0 win over Tunisia in Kobe, Japan. The win moved Russia to the top of Group H.

In other action Wednesday , three-time champion Germany is playing Ireland in Ibaraki, Japan. The Germans, who opened with an impressive 8-0 win in their first Group-E match against Saudi Arabia, can secure a place in the second round with a win.

The Irish team is coming off a 1-1 draw in their opening match against Cameroon.
