Gunmen have shot dead a member of the local parliament in Indonesia's troubled province of Aceh. Taslim Jalil is the latest local politician to have been killed in the province in the past two years.
Police officials in Aceh Wednesday say local politician Taslim Jalil was shot several times while standing in the doorway of his home near the provincial capital, Banda Aceh, 1,700 kilometers northeast of Jakarta.
He appears to have been shot by two gunmen dressed in camouflage uniforms who asked him for a drink of water.
Police are still investigating the incident, but say they suspect rebels of the Free Aceh Movement were responsible.
The Jakarta Post reports that a spokesman for the Free Aceh Movement has denied his group is behind the killing and points the finger at security officers who patrol the area.
The newspaper says Mr. Jalil was the tenth parliamentary from Aceh to be killed in the past two years.
The Free Aceh Movement has been fighting for an independent state since the 1970s. Thousands of people have died in violence.
Aceh contains considerably mineral wealth, including large deposits of petroleum. The Indonesian government has offered the rebels regional autonomy and a large share of the revenues from the minerals. But it has rejected demands for independence.
