Brazilian Police Find Possible Remains of Dead Reporter - 2002-06-12

Brazilian police say they may have found the remains of a television journalist murdered while working undercover in a Rio de Janeiro slum.

Authorities probing the death of TV Globo reporter Tim Lopes Tuesday said a mini-camera bearing the station's inscription turned up near the slum. The station could not immediately determine whether the camera was the one Mr. Lopes had been using.

Investigators also tell the Associated Press decaying clothing found on the remains resembled that worn by the investigative reporter.

Mr. Lopes vanished while researching reports of drug dealing and the sexual exploitation of minors at parties hosted by local drug traffickers.

Police confirmed his death Monday. They said two suspects in custody told them a local drug lord tortured Mr. Lopes, killed him with a sword, and had the body burned and buried at a secret gravesite. Police are searching for the drug lord, identified as Elias Pereira da Silva.

Mr. Lopes' death has sparked an outcry among Brazilian and international press groups.
