World Cup Contest Winners - 2002-07-31

English to Africa's Sonny Side of Sports has announced the winners of its World Cup Contest. The winners were picked randomly on July 30th during a brief ceremony at the service's Washington, DC headquarters. Nearly 700 people were eligible for the drawing. They had to correctly answer a World Cup-related question asked on-air by Sonny Young, the host of the "Sonny Side of Sports" show.

And the winners are:

The 5 winners will each receive a VOA T-shirt, a red, white and blue VOA soccer ball, a mesh carrying net for the ball, and a colorful 102-page FIFA magazine on the 17th World Cup finals.

English to Africa chief Rebecca McMenamin said she was very pleased with the listener response to the contest. There were entries from 27 countries: Benin, Botswana, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, England, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Liberia, Libya, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, United States, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
