Cook Wins Gold in Commonwealth Women's Cycling Race - 2002-08-03


Nicole Cook of Wales surged in the final stretch Saturday to earn the gold medal in the women's cycling road race at the Commonwealth games in Manchester, England.

Cooke broke from a group of seven riders to finish the 93.5 kilometer course in 2:35:17.

In weightlifting, New Zealand's Nigel Avery took both the overall, and clean and jerk in the 105 kilogram competition.

India's Jaspal Rana earned his country's 13th gold medal of the games by taking the men's 25-meter Center Fire Pistol event. And Australian Kim Frazer won the women's 50-meter Rifle Prone at the Bisley range outside London.
