Serena Williams Defeats Sister, Wins US Open - 2002-09-08

Serena Williams is the 2002 U.S. Open tennis champion. She beat her sister, Venus Saturday night in New York.

The little sister has done it again. Serena defeated Venus for a third straight grand slam to win the U.S. Open title 6-4, 6-3. As so often is the case in these sibling battles, the tennis was far from pretty. Venus was unable to equal Serena's brute strength, physically and mentally.

Serena was delighted at the victory. "I am just happy to win here again," she said. "It's been a long time since 1999 and I almost nearly forgot how I felt."

Venus was disappointed. "A loss is a loss," she said. "Its all the same sure but I am still proud of Serena. She definitely earned it. When you walk out there and win Grand Slams, it's not because anyone gave it to you."

So what a year for Serena, the French Open, Wimbledon and now U.S. Open champion.
