Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is his party's nominee for another term as the country's leader. While there was no doubt about the outcome of Mr. Mubarak's nomination, there is much speculation concerning the political future of one of his sons.
Hosni Mubarak was the only candidate on the presidential ballot for Egypt's National Democratic Party when he was, overwhelmingly, approved by the 6,000 delegates present for the party's first convention in 10 years.
His nomination came as no surprise. Political analysts have said the National Democratic Party stands for very little other than to remain loyal to Mr. Mubarak, who has been Egypt's president since 1981, following the assassination of Anwar Sadat.
What is gaining attention at this year's convention is speculation on the election of the party's general secretariat. It is widely believed that Mr. Mubarak's 39-year-old son, Gamal Mubarak, will replace longtime presidential confidant Yousef Wali.
There have been a series of recent scandals involving parliament members of the National Democratic Party close to Mr. Wali.
In recent months, members of the party and political analysts have predicted Gamal Mubarak was poised to take control of the party. Many believe President Mubarak is grooming his son as his successor, although the president has denied such speculation.
Gamal Mubarak is a banker who studied at the American University in Cairo and has worked abroad.
