Women's Tennis: Clijsters Reaches Semifinals of WTA Championships in Los Angeles - 2002-11-09


World number-six women's tennis player Kim Clijsters of Belgium has reached the semifinals of the WTA Championships in Los Angeles with a straight-set win over countrywoman Justine Henin.

Clijsters overpowered her smaller opponent, taking less than an hour to win the match, 6-2, 6-1. In the semifinals she takes on the winner of the day's other quarterfinal match between Americans Monica Seles and world number two Venus Williams.

Saturday's quarterfinals have world number one Serena Williams of the United States taking on Yugoslavia's Jelena Dokic, while Jennifer Capriati of the United States faces Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria.

The tournament brings together the top 16 ranked singles players and the top eight doubles teams for a single elimination competition. The singles winner receives $765,000.
