US-Led Coalition Suffers First Casualties in Helicopter Accident, 16 Dead

U.S. and coalition forces have suffered their first casualties in the military action against Iraq. A U.S. military helicopter has crashed in Kuwait, killing all 16 U.S. and British personnel on board.

Military officials confirm that a U.S. Sea Knight marine helicopter crashed in Kuwait, just south of the Iraqi border, killing everyone on board. Officials say the crash appears to have been an accident, but an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the crash.

This type of helicopter is a troop transport. These are huge, two-rotor helicopters, and they have some history of crashes.

U.S. and coalition forces are currently moving into southern Iraq in armored columns. Helicopters are supporting the operation, providing transport and airborne firepower.
