Human Rights Groups Blast Government for Violence Following Stay-Aways - 2003-03-24

Human rights groups are condemning violence by the government following last week’s nationwide strike against the government. Hundreds of people have been treated in hospitals in recent days and hundreds of others have been arrested.

Amnesty International and the Zimbabwean Human Rights NGO Forum have issued statements condemning the violence and mass arrests. Studio 7’s Carole Gombakomba spoke Eileen Sawyer, Director of the Human Rights Forum. She says both sides are to blame for recent acts of violence but says state agents are at the heart of the problem.
