Venezuelan Court Orders Arrest of Policemen Accused of  Violence Against Protesters - 2003-04-17

Venezuelan appeals court has ordered the arrest of eight police officers accused of killing two people and injuring 35 others during an anti-government protest last year.

The court in Aragua state, outside the capital Caracas, ruled Wednesday to overturn a prior court decision freeing the eight men. The policemen have been charged with murder and improper use of a weapon during the protest.

A court earlier this month dismissed murder charges against four government supporters also accused in the shooting.

The rally was part of massive demonstrations against President Hugo Chavez, which left 19 people dead. The bloodshed led to Mr. Chavez's brief ouster in an unsuccessful coup attempt.
