Fighting Fake Drugs In Nigeria - 2003-06-13

The head of Nigeria’s drug control agency says she’s on the trail of prominent citizens behind the importation of fake and expired drugs.

Dora Akunyili, the director general of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, says millions of Nigerians have died after taking these medications. Her job is to investigate and arrest businessmen importing them.

The World Health Organization says more than forty percent of medications in the Nigerian market are substandard. Mrs. Akunyili says despite threats by several syndicates dealing in bad drugs, she will continue to do her job.
