Governor of Puerto Rico Visits US for Economic Talks - 2003-06-16

The governor of Puerto Rico is in the United States for economic talks with White House officials and to help get out the vote among Puerto Ricans in Pennsylvania.

Governor Sila Calderon will hold economic development discussions with members of the Bush administration today and Tuesday. A spokesman said she will travel to Pennsylvania on Wednesday to promote voter registration in Philadelphia.

U.S. census figures show that more than six percent, or 90,000 of the 1.5 million, of the residents of Philadelphia County are Puerto Rican.

Ms. Calderon is in the midst of a campaign to encourage the 3.4 million Puerto Ricans living on the U.S. mainland to vote in elections wherever they live. The $6 million campaign is expected to last three years.

Puerto Rico is a commonwealth in association with the United States, with federal matters largely controlled by Washington.
