Police in Italy have arrested a Peruvian man suspected of belonging to the Maoist Shining Path guerrilla group.
Italian authorities in Trieste said Saturday that Pablo Francisco La Torre Carrasco was arrested under an international arrest warrant issued by Peru. Peruvian authorities have implicated Mr. Carrasco and other Shining Path rebels in the attacks and murders of police and civilians in Peru.
As many as 60,000 people were killed or disappeared during the 20-year war between Peru and two leftist guerrilla groups. Officials estimate 52 percent of the confirmed deaths were committed by Shining Path members.
Italian authorities say Mr. Carrasco will be detained until Peruvian authorities can file an extradition request.
