Azerbaijan's Ruling Party  Nominates Presidential Candidate - 2003-06-23

Azerbaijan's ruling party has nominated President Heydar Aliyev as its candidate in this year's presidential election.

The New Azerbaijan party, Yeni Azerbaijan, says it will submit formal nomination documents to the election commission before the end of the week.

The 80-year-old president has been in ill health for some time, and earlier this year he collapsed twice while making a televised speech.

Mr. Aliyev has already served two terms as president. Although the Azerbaijan constitution limits a president to two five-year terms, Mr. Aliyev's supporters say he remains eligible because he has only served one term under the current constitution.
