Chinese Anti-Drug Hero Admits Smuggling Narcotics - 2003-06-24

Chinese officials say a police officer once declared a national hero for his campaign against drug trafficking has been charged with smuggling heroin.

Zhou Kun was arrested in January in Wuhan in central China after two drug smugglers said they were working for the former anti-drug campaigner. China's official Xinhua news agency reported the arrest Tuesday, saying Mr. Zhou had confessed to smuggling narcotics.

In 2000, Mr. Zhou was lauded with the "National Advanced Worker" award for his contributions to the fight against drug trafficking in China. He was credited with capturing more than 1,000 drug traffickers and seizing more than 50 kilograms of narcotics as the leader of an anti-drug brigade in southwestern Guizhou province.
