Golf:  Woods, Els Score Over Par at British Open - 2003-07-18

The world's top two ranked golfers, American Tiger Woods and South African Ernie Els, are both over par and well behind leader Hennie Otto heading into Friday's second round at the British Open in Sandwich, England.

Woods, the top ranked player in the world, put his first drive of the day so far into the rough that no one could find the ball. He had a triple-bogey seven on the first hole, on his way to carding a 2-over-par, 73 in Thursday's opening round.

The defending British Open champion, Els, had an even worse day, posting a 78 on the windy Royal Saint George's course.

Otto, the leader, was one of only five players to finish Thursday's round under par. The young South African shot a 68. He is one shot ahead of American Davis Love and Greg Norman of Australia, and two stokes ahead of SK Ho of South Korea and Sweden's Fredrik Jacobson.
