The leader of Azerbaijan's biggest opposition party has been registered as a candidate for October's presidential election. Azerbaijan's election commission Sunday voted to include Musavat party leader Isa Gambar on the October 15 ballot.
The commission also approved the inclusion of two other candidates, Abutalib Samedov and Hudrat Hasanquliyev.
Already on the ballot is Azerbaijan President Heidar Aliyev, currently hospitalized in Turkey, and his son Ilham.
Many observers believe Azerbaijan's ailing leader is preparing his son, who is vice-president of the state oil company and deputy head of the ruling party, to succeed him.
