Iran's Khamenei Urges Leniency for Student Protesters - 2003-08-05

Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has urged the judiciary to show leniency towards students arrested during recent pro-democracy demonstrations.

Iran's official IRNA news agency reported Tuesday that Ayatollah Khamenei's representatives at universities had written him seeking clemency for the detained students.

Iranian officials said some 4,000 people were detained across Iran during June and July's demonstrations. But the government says more than half were quickly released.
