US Consumer Spending Up - 2003-09-29

Spending by U.S. consumers rose a strong 0.8 percent in August.

Economists say that will help boost the U.S. economy because consumer spending is responsible for about 70 percent of all economic activity in the United States.

The August increase was about what economists had expected and it grew in part from tax cuts enacted a couple of months ago in the hope of boosting the sluggish U.S. economy.
