Indian-American Advances in Bid for Election as Louisiana Governor - 2003-10-05

The son of immigrants from India has moved one step closer to becoming the first Indian-American U.S. state governor after winning a run-off spot in the Louisiana gubernatorial race.

Republican Piyush "Bobby" Jindal won Saturday's first round of voting, receiving more than 30 percent of the ballots.

His rival in the November 15 run-off will be Louisiana's Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Blanco, who came in second, fending off two other Democratic rivals, with about 18 percent of the vote.

Should Ms. Blanco win the second election round, she will be the Louisiana's first female governor.
