Federer Advances at Swiss Indoor Tennis Tourney - 2003-10-21


Wimbledon tennis champion Rober Federer of Switzerland has reached the second round of the Swiss Indoors tennis tournament in Basel, Switzerland. Federer, the second seed, defeated countryman Marc Rosset in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.

Also today, fifth-seeded Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic overcame a first set loss to score a three set win over Arvind Parmar of India, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0. Novak faces either Spain's Rafael Nadal or Feliciano Lopez in the second round.

Meanwhile, Germany's Thomas Behrend came from behind to score a three-set win over American James Blake (1-6, 6-3, 6-4). Arnaud Clement of France ousted countryman Paul-Henri Mathieu in straight sets (6-4, 7-6). Michale Llodra of France ousted Bohdan Ulirach of the Czech Republic (6-3, 6-4).

At the Stockholm Open men's tennis tournament in Sweden, two seeded players, number seven Wayne Ferreira and number eight Jarkko Nieminen, were knocked out of the first round.

South African Ferreira lost in straight sets to Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina (6-4, 6-2). Finland's Jarkko Nieminen lost in three sets to Gregory Carraz of France (6-7, 7-5, 2-6).

In other matches, American Robby Ginepri scored a straight set win over Kristo Vliegen of Belgium (6-1, 6-3). Julien Benneteau of France defeated Jurgen Melzer of Austria in straight sets (6-1, 6-1).
