China Wins Asia Women's Basketball Championship - 2004-01-19

China has won the Asian women's basketball championship for the second straight year by beating Japan, 92-80, Monday at the Sendai City Gymnasium.

The win gave China its eighth Asian title, the Asian Games gold medal and a trip to this year's Athen's Olympics.

Leading the way for China was Wang Ling who scored 24 points while teammate Miao Lijie tossed in 21.

Despite the loss, finalist Japan earned a berth at this year's Olympic Games by virtue of its 81-72 overtime win against South Korea in Sunday's semifinal. The last time Japan won the championship was in 1970.

Also going to the Olympics is South Korea, who bounced back from their surprise defeat by Japan. South Korea destroyed Taiwan, 88-59, in the bronze medal game Monday to earn the third and final Olympic berth.

Beon Yeon-ha led the way for South Korea scoring 18 points, but by the start of the fourth quarter South Korea had a commanding 75-39 lead.
