Funeral Procession for Former US President Ronald Reagan Begins - 2004-06-09

A horse-drawn carriage bearing the body of former President Ronald Reagan is making its way down Constitution Avenue, here in Washington, on its way to the U.S. Capitol for his state funeral.

Mr. Reagan's casket arrived from California at Andrews Air Force Base, outside Washington, and was transported by hearse on the first part of its journey into the city.

Tens of thousands of people are lining the streets to pay their respects, and security is tight. Military jets will fly over the procession in tribute to Mr. Reagan.

The funeral will take place at the Capitol Rotunda, where the body will then lie in state until Friday's national memorial service for the 40th president.

Mr. Reagan will be buried during a private ceremony Friday evening in California.
