US Marine en Route to US After Disappearing in Iraq - 2004-07-15

The U.S. Marine who disappeared in Iraq and later resurfaced in Lebanon has left Germany en route to the United States.

Corporal Wassef Ali Hassoun took off from Ramstein Air Base aboard an Air Force C-5 Galaxy transport jet early Thursday for Dover, Delaware, a day after he was originally scheduled to depart.

The Marine Corporal's flight was delayed Wednesday because of mechanical problems.

The Lebanese-born Marine disappeared in Iraq in June and was reportedly captured by militants. It is unclear how he got from Iraq to Lebanon, where he contacted American embassy officials last week.

Military intelligence officials want to question him about events surrounding his disappearance after he returns to the United States.
