Arab League Does Not See Darfur As Racial Conflict - 2004-08-11

The highest ranking Republican in the US Senate, Bill Frist, says he has no doubt that the violence in Sudan is genocide.

For over a year, pro-government Arab militia has been attacking black civilians in the western Sudanese province of Darfur. Tens of thousands of civilians have been killed, and hundreds of thousands displaced.

But a spokesman for the Arab League, Hossam Zaki, says his organization disagrees with Senator Frist. He says the 22-member organization does not see the violence in racial terms. And he says the Arab League supports the use of African troops from Tanzania, Rwanda and Nigeria ? but not the use of coercive force.

He spoke with English to Africa reporter William Eagle. Click above links to listen or download interview.
