Costa Rican President Asks OAS Head to Answer Bribery Allegations - 2004-10-04

Costa Rican President Abel Pacheco says he will demand the resignation of the new secretary general of the Organization of American States if he does not answer allegations of corruption.

Mr. Pacheco gave Miguel Angel Rodriguez until late Monday to answer allegations of taking some $2.4 million in bribes while he was president of Costa Rica.

The current Costa Rican leader said if Mr. Rodriguez does not respond, he will take steps to secure his resignation or have him deposed from the OAS.

Mr. Rodriguez was sworn-in as head of the OAS last month.

On Friday, prosecutors in Costa Rica said they were looking into allegations Mr. Rodriguez took payments from a French telephone company, Alcatel, that won major contracts when he was Costa Rica's president from 1998 to 2002.
