Mortars Hit Baghdad, US Strikes Sadr City  - 2004-10-05

update

Insurgents in Iraq fired several mortar rounds into central Baghdad Tuesday, as U.S. forces hit insurgent targets in the Sadr City neighborhood.

There have been no confirmed reports of casualties.

U.S. forces also bombed targets in the insurgent stronghold of Fallujah, west of Baghdad.

Meanwhile, U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld suggested Monday that more raids like the massive one launched late last week in Samarra would be needed to stabilize Iraq and defeat the insurgents.

Twenty-four Iraqis were killed in multiple car bombings in Baghdad and the northern city of Mosul.

The U.S. military says one American soldier was killed and two others wounded, when their convoy hit a roadside bomb near Baghdad late Monday.
