MLB: Boston Red Sox Advance to 2nd Round of Playoffs - 2004-10-09

The Boston Red Sox have advanced to the second round of the Major League Baseball playoffs, after eliminating the Anaheim Angels three games to none in their best of five American League series.

The Red Sox beat the visiting Angels 8-6 in 10 innings Friday. David Ortiz hit the game-ending two-run home run in the 10th inning to lift Boston at Fenway Park.

The Red Sox will play the winner of the first round series between the New York Yankees and the Minnesota Twins.

In that series Friday, Yankees slugger Derek Jeter drove in three runs to lead his team to an 8-4 win over the Twins, and put New York one game away from clinching the series with Minnesota. The Yankees have a 2-1 lead in the five game series and can advance with a victory Saturday in game four in Minnesota.

In National League action today, St. Louis will try to wrap its series with Los Angeles when the visiting Cardinals take on the Dodgers in game three of their five-game series. The Cardinals lead the series 2-0.

Meanwhile, the Atlanta Braves go up against the host Houston Astros in game three of their five game series, which is tied at one game apiece.
