French philosopher Jacques Derrida has died at the age of 74.

Friends of the pilosopher say he died of cancer late Friday in a Paris hospital.

Born in Algeria in 1930, Mr. Derrida studied at the Sorbonne before starting a teaching career there and at American universities.

Mr. Derrida is best known as the founder of the deconstructionist school of philosophy, which sees the meaning of a text as not definite and unchanging but dependent on how a reader interprets it.
