Saudi Women Not Likely to Vote in Upcoming Municipal Elections - 2004-10-11

Saudi Arabia's Interior Minister says women are not likely to vote in next year's municipal elections -- the first in the kingdom in decades.

After security talks in Kuwait Sunday, Prince Nayef says he does not think it is likely that women will take part in the three-stage elections that are set to begin on February 10 in Riyadh.

Voting is to take place in other parts of the country in March and April.

Observers say the elections are part of the government's measured response to calls for political and social changes in the Saudi kingdom.
