At Least 11 Killed In Amsterdam Airport Fire

update

Authorities in the Netherlands say at least 11 people have been killed and 15 others injured in a fire at an airport detention center.

Officials say the dead were illegal immigrants awaiting expulsion from the country. The victims' names and nationalities were not immediately released.

The fire began early Thursday at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport. Authorities say the blaze was brought under control several hours later. The cause was under investigation.

About 350 people were being held in the complex when the fire broke out. One survivor told Dutch media that security guards failed to react quickly to prisoners' cries for help.

The cells at Schiphol airport are mainly used to lock up drug smugglers and people who have been refused entry into the Netherlands.
