The Australian supermaxi yacht Wild Oats has completed the first Sydney to Hobart sweep in 60 years.
The hi-tech, 30-meter-long vessel is the only yacht to capture the three event titles since 1945 when the Rani swept the inaugural race. Wild Oats received word Friday it had won the handicap honor after taking the line victory and race record earlier this week. The crew had to wait for the smaller boats to complete the race to confirm the handicap win.
The yacht arrived in Hobart early Wednesday, completing the 1,163 nautical kilometer race in a record time of one day, 18 hours, 40 minutes and 10 seconds. That time sliced more than one hour off the previous record set in 1999.
