Brazil Pays Final Respects to General Who Died in Haiti

update

Brazil has paid its final respects to the Brazilian general who led the U.N. peacekeepers in Haiti, and was found dead Saturday.

Brazil's president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, attended the ceremony in Brasilia Wednesday for Lieutenant General Urano Teixeira da Matta Bacellar.

The general's body was then taken to Rio de Janeiro for burial.

Bacellar was found dead with a gunshot wound Saturday in his hotel room in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince. Officials say they believe he committed suicide.

Brazil has nominated two people to replace Bacellar, General Jose Elito Carvalho de Siqueira and General Jeannot Jansen da Silva Filho.
