Car Bomb Blast Kills 2 in Thailand's Restive South

update

Police in Thailand say a car bomb explosion in southern Narathiwat province has killed two people and injured one other.

Authorities say the bomb exploded Thursday near a municipal office in Joh Ai Rong district, where officials were expected to gather later in the day for a monthly meeting.

The victims were in the vehicle. It is not clear how the bomb was detonated.

Since January of 2004, more than 1,000 people have been killed in violence in the three Muslim-majority provinces of mainly Buddhist Thailand.

Thailand's government blames the unrest on separatist militants, organized criminals and corrupt local officials.

Some information for this report was provided by AP and Reuters.
