French Police Arrest More Than 200 in 9th Straight Night of Riots

update

French police say they have arrested more than 200 people as riots in the Paris suburbs continued for a ninth straight night.

Officials say rampaging youths, most of whom belong to France's North African minority, torched about 900 vehicles and several buildings late Friday as the violence spread to cities beyond Paris for the second night.

Top French police official, Marc Gautron told reporters the rioters have changed tactics. He says they are setting fires then fleeing to avoid confrontations with police.

Many of the rioters say the French government has a racial bias and treats them as second-class citizens.

The violence started last week when two North African teenagers, believing police were chasing them, hid in a power station and were accidentally electrocuted. Police say they were not chasing the boys.
