Eddie Albert, the U.S. actor best known for his portrayal of a frustrated city attorney turned country farmer in the hit television series Green Acres, has died in Los Angeles at the age of 99.

Albert, who performed on Broadway, in movies and on television, received two Academy Award nominations for his film work on Roman Holiday (1953) and The Heartbreak Kid (1972). He made his motion picture debut in the 1938 film Brother Rat, co-starring with another little-known actor, Ronald Reagan - the future president of the United States.

Albert, who acted well into his eighties, was an avid conservationist and traveled the world endorsing children's rights issues for UNICEF.

A family spokesman said Albert died of complications from pneumonia.
