Iraq's Sunni Arabs Demand International Probe of Prisoner Abuse

update

Iraq's main Sunni Arab political party is demanding an international investigation into allegations that security forces tortured and abused prisoners held at secret detention centers in Baghdad.

The Iraqi Islamic Party made the demand Wednesday. It also called on the United Nations, the Arab League and humanitarian organizations to denounce what the party describes as these clear cases of human rights violations.

The group said there have been similar cases in the past, and that government probes into them were not effective.

On Tuesday, Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari ordered an investigation into the allegations of prisoner abuse at a jail run by the Interior Ministry.

Deputy Interior Minister Hussein Kamal has denounced the prison conditions, and said the detainees were moved to another facility where they are receiving medical care.

U.S. troops discovered the prison Sunday, and said 165 detainees were being held there.
