Lawyers to Seek Dismissal of Charges Against Former Peruvian President

update

Lawyers for Peru's former President Alberto Fujimori say they will seek dismissal of all charges against him, which could allow his return from exile in Japan to run for the presidency in 2006.

Mr. Fujimori is wanted in Peru on murder and corruption charges - accusations he has denied.

The former president has hired a new legal team which plans to show that Peru's justice system did not allow him to mount a proper defense. The move could annul the cases, allowing his return to Peru.

Mr. Fujimori fled to Japan in 2000, when a corruption scandal toppled his regime. He is also wanted in connection with murders carried out by death squads in the early 1990's. Tokyo has refused to extradite him, saying his parents' Japanese citizenship makes him a Japanese citizen.
