MLB: Dodgers Score 10 Runs Against Reds in 1st Inning

In major-league baseball, the Los Angeles Dodgers suffocated the Cincinnati Reds with 10 runs in the first inning, on the way to a 13-6 win Friday.

Jeff Kent had a two-run home run and a three-run double before the Reds even had a chance to bat. Hee-Seop Choi also hit a two-run homer in the top of the first, which lasted nearly a half hour. Cincinnati starter Paul Wilson failed to record a single out; he allowed eight runs on five hits, a walk and two hit batters.

In another National League game, the Philadelphia Phillies scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning on a throwing error by Chicago's LaTroy Hawkins and edged the Cubs, 3-2.

The New York Mets' catcher Mike Piazza hit two homers in a 7-4 win over the Brewers in Milwaukee.

Other National League winners were the Braves, Marlins, Padres, Diamondbacks and Nationals.

The Atlanta Braves beat the visiting Houston Astros, 9-4. The Florida Marlins shut out the Colorado Rockies, 7-0, in Miami. The Rockies have the worst record in the majors - 20 losses against just six wins. The San Diego Padres edged the Cardinals, 6-5, in St. Louis. The Arizona Diamondbacks doubled the Pittsburgh Pirates, 8-4, in Phoenix. And the Washington Nationals broke open a close game in San Francisco with five runs in the eighth inning, beating the Giants 9-3.

In the American League, the New York Yankees committed three errors in the top of the 10th inning, giving up three runs in a 6-3 loss to the Oakland Athletics. The Yankees have lost four straight games and are tied with Tampa Bay for the worst record in the league - 19 losses against 11 wins.

The Chicago White Sox, with the best record in the majors at 22-7, won their sixth straight game, 5-3 over the Blue Jays 5-3 in Toronto.

The defending World Series champion Boston Red Sox thumped the visiting Seattle Mariners, 7-2.

Other American League winners were the Orioles, Twins, Indians and Angels.

The Baltimore Orioles got by the visiting Kansas City Royals, 3-1. The Minnesota Twins thrashed the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, 7-1, in St. Petersburg, Florida. The Cleveland Indians scored seven runs in top of the first inning, then held on to beat the Texas Rangers, 8-6. And the Los Angeles Angels downed the visiting Detroit Tigers, 4-3.
