South Korea's Prime Minister Lee Hae-chan (r) talks with North Korea's No. 2 leader Kim Yong Nam |
South Korea's Yonhap news agency said that Prime Minister Lee Hae-chan spoke with North Korea's Kim Yong Nam for about 10 minutes, but there were no discussions on major issues such as the resumption of nuclear talks or inter-Korean dialogue. It was said to be the highest level contact between the two Koreas since 2000.
Meanwhile, officials from the two Koreas met Friday in the North Korean border town of Kaesong to discuss an outbreak of bird flu in Pyongyang.
North Korea admitted early this month that an outbreak of bird flu forced it to cull over 218,000 chickens.
South Korea is sending a first shipment of medications and equipment to the North on Saturday.
