Shani Davis Sets New 1,500 Meter Speedskating Record


Olympic silver medalist Shani Davis of the United States has set a world record in the men's 1,500 -meter event Sunday at the International Skating Union all-around speedskating world championships in Calgary, Canada.

Davis finished in 1:42.68 Sunday. He lowered the previous world record by 0.1 second (1:42.78) that had been set in 2005 by U.S. teammate and rival Chad Hedrick. Davis and Hedrick publicly feuded at the Turin Games. Davis won the first individual gold medal by a black athlete in Winter Olympics history in the men's 1,000 meter race.

Hedrick, who was paired with Davis in Sunday's race, placed second in 1:42.85. Denny Morrison of Canada was third in 1:42.97.
