The U.S. government has decided not to extradite a pair of Venezuelan military officers accused of bombing two embassies in Caracas.
The men, Jose Colina and German Varela have been held in a U.S. detention center for more than two years. They are wanted in Venezuela for the 2003 bomb attacks on the Spanish and Colombian embassies in Caracas. The bombings damaged both embassies but caused no serious injuries.
Lawyers for the men say the government's decision was made partly because of concerns about alleged human rights abuses in Venezuela and added the two may be released soon.
Last month, a U.S. State Department report on human rights alleged several violations in Venezuela, including unlawful killings of criminal suspects and the torture and abuse of detainees.
