Burma Evacuating Camps Ahead of Cyclone

Officials in Burma say they are evacuating thousands of residents from camps for displaced people ahead of a cyclone expected later this week.

The officials say they are moving people from low-lying camps in the west of the country, where communal violence broke out last year between Buddhists and Muslims.

Hundreds died in that violence and tens of thousands of others were left homeless, mostly ethnic Rohingya Muslims.

Weather forecasters predict that Cyclone Mahasen will hit land in neighboring Bangladesh later this week. However, they say heavy rains and winds also will affect Burma, especially along the low-lying western regions.

In 2008, Cyclone Nargis devastated Burma's Irrawaddy delta region, killing more than 130,000 people.
