LIVE BLOG: Democrats Highlight Contrasts With Republicans as Convention Opens

update

First lady Michelle Obama gave a forceful, impassioned defense of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, casting her as the only candidate who can be trusted as a role model for the nation's children. Obama was among the power lineup of speakers taking the stage in Philadelphia at the Democratic National Convention. The convention’s first day was embroiled in controversy over leaked emails that showed how party leaders sought to ease Clinton's path to the nomination by mocking her challenger, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.

Sanders says the election isn't about the polls, campaign strategy or fundraising. "This election is about – and must be about – the needs of the American people and the kind of future we create for our children and grandchildren."

VOA's Katherine Gypson can see one of the "silenced" people (some Sanders supporters have placed tape over their mouths with the word 'Silenced' on them) weeping. Other supporters are lovingly shouting along with his familiar lines.

Sanders tells the delegates, "No one is more disappointed than I am. (However) I hope you take enormous pride in the historic accomplishments we have achieved."

Sanders tells delegates he looks forward to the roll call vote Tuesday night. That elicits big cheers.
