International Delegrates Raise $3.6 Billion for Sudan's Darfur

Delegates at a donor conference in Qatar have pledged $3.6 billion to help rebuild Sudan's war-battered Darfur region.

Qatari officials announced the total Monday at the end of a two-day conference to raise funds for development and reconstruction in Darfur.

While no breakdown was provided, the figure includes a $500 million commitment from Qatar and $35 million from the European Union.

Prior to the start of the conference on Sunday, Britain promised $100 million to Sudan over three years, with about half of that amount going to Darfur.

Darfur has been racked by fighting and violence since rebel groups launched an uprising against Sudan's central government in 2003.

The United Nations estimates more than 300,000 people have died and close to two million civilians have been forced from their homes. Periodic fighting and tribal clashes continue.
